An open-air museum in Takayama with around 30 traditional Hida buildings, including steep-roofed gassho-zukuri farmhouses. Interiors, farming tools, craft demonstrations and seasonal events recreate life in a mountain village shaped by heavy snow.
An annual riverside performance in which trained handlers hold cylindrical tezutsu fireworks that release fountains of sparks. The 2026 event took place on August 9 from 19:30 to 21:00 along the Miyagawa between Miyamaebashi and Fudobashi, about a 15-minute walk from Takayama Station.
Takayama’s vermilion Nakabashi Bridge crosses the Miyagawa beside the old town and Takayama Jinya. Seasonal evening illumination changes the scene through spring greenery, summer nights and other announced periods; each year’s dates should be confirmed before a night visit.
A 1.4-kilometre forest climb in Hida Kiyomi passing many small cascades, giant mossy boulders and old beech and oak trees before reaching the 30-metre Okura Falls. Most visitors can reach the main fall in under an hour.
A small satoyama stay in Hida’s Tanekura village, where terraced fields, stone walls and traditional itakura wooden storehouses preserve a rural landscape. The century-old inn and converted storehouse cottages offer a slow village stay; contact the operator for current room and meal availability.
A reservation-based ride on electric-assisted rail bikes fixed to the former Kamioka Railway tracks. Town and canyon courses offer tunnels, bridges and mountain scenery; their starting points differ, and the attraction normally pauses during winter.
A limited summer sunflower garden at Arkopia Mountain Park in Kuguno, Takayama. In 2026 around 200,000 sunflowers are paired with family activities, food and mountain experiences. The garden is seasonal, so confirm flowering and weather closure before travelling.
An 800-metre tourist cave formed about 250 million years ago at 900 metres elevation. The interior averages around 12°C throughout the year and contains rare helictites. Admission also covers the Ohashi Collection Museum; later cave sections are steep and narrow.
