Living Edo Samurai Gardens and Trimmed Green Hedges
Spring azaleas blossom along mossy stone avenues; peaceful strolling in any season with Chiran green tea tastings.
Praised as the 'Little Kyoto of Satsuma', Chiran is an exquisitely preserved Edo-period samurai village dating back 260 years. Framed by trimmed podocarpus hedges and curved volcanic stone walls, seven historic residences feature dry landscape rock gardens ingeniously designed to borrow the silhouette of Mount Mother (Hahagadake).
