Nakabashi Bridge and Seasonal Illumination
Takayama’s vermilion Nakabashi Bridge crosses the Miyagawa beside the old town and Takayama Jinya. Seasonal evening illumination changes the scene through spring greenery, summer nights and other announced periods; each year’s dates should be confirmed before a night visit.
Hida Takayama Tezutsu Fireworks Performance
An annual riverside performance in which trained handlers hold cylindrical tezutsu fireworks that release fountains of sparks. The 2026 event took place on August 9 from 19:30 to 21:00 along the Miyagawa between Miyamaebashi and Fudobashi, about a 15-minute walk from Takayama Station.
Hida-Osaka Waterfalls and Gandate Gorge
Hida-Osaka’s volcanic landscape contains more than 200 waterfalls and the huge lava cliff of Gandate Gorge. The short Mitsudaki course is the easiest independent introduction, while many backcountry waterfall routes require a certified local guide and advance booking.
Okura Falls Nature Trail Park
A 1.4-kilometre forest climb in Hida Kiyomi passing many small cascades, giant mossy boulders and old beech and oak trees before reaching the 30-metre Okura Falls. Most visitors can reach the main fall in under an hour.
Utsue 48 Waterfalls Prefectural Park
A roughly one-kilometre mountain trail in Takayama linking waterfalls of different sizes through old trees and moss-covered boulders. A lookout opens toward the Hida mountains, while the steep ravine and winter snow require seasonal planning.
Hida Great Limestone Cave
An 800-metre tourist cave formed about 250 million years ago at 900 metres elevation. The interior averages around 12°C throughout the year and contains rare helictites. Admission also covers the Ohashi Collection Museum; later cave sections are steep and narrow.
Okuhida Onsen Villages
Five mountain hot-spring districts—Hirayu, Fukuji, Shin-Hirayu, Tochio and Shinhotaka—form Okuhida Onsen-go. More than 100 baths combine open-air bathing with alpine scenery, autumn colour and deep winter snow; access and bathing rules vary by facility.
